Decorative moldings and built-ins bring architecture to what would otherwise be boring, boxy rooms. Sure, these ceilings look to be 9' high -- higher than you and I might have in our suburban tract homes -- but almost everything you'll see in these rooms is achievable in an owned home, if maybe not in a rented apartment.

Notice the use of wallpaper and decorative tile as a simple way of adding pattern to the rooms. I look at these rooms, and think, "I could make my house look like that."

The rooms bring to mind comfortable every-day family living, and I find the design approachable.
